The Adventure Begins

The Adventure Begins

What does one pack when taking a two-week RV trip across the country? Well, that would depend. But according to the Blundell Fun Guide, at least three items from each of the following categories are required for the journey: musical instrument, mascot, costume, and decoration. All joking aside, we all found it difficult to select the limited items and clothing for the many places we would visit along the way.

Nat, Kitty and Bubba arose promptly at 4:45am on the morning of Wednesday, June 8th, to start the expedition. Security lines at SeaTac weren’t terribly long and we found our spot in three leather terminal seats with steaming bagel breakfast sandwiches. After we boarded and found our row, the aircraft kicked up its wheels and headed for Chicago.

On the opposite Coast, Drew was waking a few hours later and moving more leisurely, yet equally as excited for the voyage. Departing from Reagan, he mounted his trusty Pegasus steed and rode west across the DC skyline to meet us in Chicago (okay so he flew on an airplane, but how can we be sure Drew doesn’t have access to this form of transportation??).

Around 1:30pm, the family was reunited in O’Hare, and our excitement further ignited. Our naturalized Haitian Uber driver conversed politely with Kitty in French, driving us to the Cruise America pick-up office, located conveniently in a strip mall ten minutes from the airport. We waited while the German family watched the twenty-five minute safety and driving video, and soon it was our turn. The video oriented us toward things like ‘when to run the generator,’ ‘what water to not drink’ (although Drew and Nat accidentally did anyway and haven’t yet died), and ‘how often to “release the waste”’ (which is the polite way to say “dump the poo”).

Upon completion of “the walkaround,” we snapped a quick pic and hopped aboard our sticker-studded Cruise America RV. The vehicle was quickly awarded its name, Tod, which was lovingly accepted by all passengers. Bubba hopped in the driver’s seat and Tod was ready to take his maiden voyage.
